This Society Hill landscape design transforms a compact urban space into an elegant Philadelphia courtyard designed for outdoor living, entertaining, and year-round beauty. Our landscape + hardscape design approach carefully balances modern functionality with the architectural character of this historic Philadelphia home, creating a private retreat that feels as though it has evolved naturally with the property. Layered plantings, natural stone, hardwood decking, and thoughtfully selected materials bring warmth and texture to the intimate setting.
At the heart of the courtyard is a custom pergola constructed with recycled wood beams, adding age, character, and authenticity to the newly designed space. Beneath and around it, hardwood decking creates a warm transition between the home and garden, while a fully equipped outdoor kitchen makes the courtyard ideal for gathering and entertaining. A dramatic double-sided fireplace serves as both a focal point and a functional element, extending the use of the courtyard into the cooler months.
Throughout the space, carefully chosen luxury planters add seasonal color and another layer of texture. Each planter is automatically and inconspicuously irrigated, allowing the lush container plantings to thrive without visible irrigation lines or the need for constant hand watering. The planting palette was selected to soften the architecture, provide privacy, and create the feeling of a layered garden within a relatively small urban footprint.
One of the courtyard’s most distinctive details connects the new landscape directly to the history of the property. A salvaged piece of stone from the original historic home was repurposed into a custom fountain, giving an original architectural element new life within the garden. The sound and movement of water add a quiet sense of retreat while preserving a tangible piece of the home’s story.
Behind the finished space was extensive technical work. PLANT Design Group completed expansive drainage improvements to properly manage water within the constrained urban property and handled the complicated permitting process required for work of this scope in historic Society Hill.
The result is a sophisticated Philadelphia courtyard garden where historic character, craftsmanship, planting, and modern outdoor living come together seamlessly.
